More COVID-19 Deaths In The UK Than the entire EU Combined!
Our World in Data published figures that show that the UK had 359 COVID deaths on Wednesday June 3 while heavily affected countries like France, Italy and Spain only had 311 deaths combined. However the process to count the deaths is different.
Countries record deaths differently. For example a pneumonia related death may be recorded as a COVID-19 death and not the other.
Also records of new deaths might as well be an old case that is only has just been reported as a new one.
The outbreak also peaked later in the UK compared to the other European countries which may also be the reason for the high figures of death.
Sir Patrick Vallance, who is the UK governments chief scientific adviser during the briefing from Downing Street said that the infection rate in the country is not coming down as fast as they want to. He said that the R rate was still close to 1 and noted that although the daily tally of cases is going down, it stood at 1871 on Wednesday. The Number could in fact be as high as 8000.
The UK is the hardest hit country in terms of death with around 40,000 deaths at the time of writing at the time of writing, second only to the United States with over 435,000 deaths.
After UK's 359 deaths, France had the the second highest death count with 81 deaths followed by Sweden's 74 and Italy's 71.
